The term "Slip Motor" historically encompasses two distinct but semantically related motor designs engineered to handle high-inertia starting loads: Wound Rotor Induction Motors (WRIM)—commonly referred to as slip ring motors—and High-Slip Squirrel Cage Induction Motors (such as NEMA Design D).
Slip Ring Motors (Wound Rotor) feature a three-phase wound rotor connected to external slip rings. By introducing external resistance via the slip rings, operators can shift the peak torque point during startup. This allows the motor to deliver maximum starting torque (up to 250% of rated torque) while keeping the starting current exceptionally low (typically 1.5 to 2 times the full-load current). Once the motor reaches operating speed, the slip rings are short-circuited, and the motor operates with the high efficiency of a standard squirrel cage motor.
High-Slip Motors (NEMA Design D), on the other hand, utilize a high-resistance rotor cage. This design inherently increases the motor's slip (typically 5% to 13% or more, compared to less than 2% for standard motors). The elevated slip shifts the torque-speed curve, providing high starting torque and cushioning the mechanical system against sudden shock loads. This makes them ideal for cyclic, high-impact applications like punch presses, oil field beam pumps, and reciprocating compressors.
